The Black Management Forum is an organisation whose primary role is to develop and empower black managers within organisations. It comprises of individual members from diverse managerial disciplines.

Being a section 21 company (Public Benefit Organisation), the commercial means are pursued through the Black Management Forum Investment Company Limited as well as other initiatives through the Trust. Beyond these, the primary source of funding for the organisation is membership fees, both from individual and corporate members.

Background

The Black Management Forum is a non-racial thought-leadership organisation with the main purpose of influencing socio-economic transformation in our country, in pursuit of socio-economic justice, fairness and equity. The Black Management Forum continues to be vocal on these principles and has been putting Corporate South Africa in check and encouraging participation of the broader South African stakeholders.

Our Mission

The Black Management Forum stands for the development and empowerment of managerial leadership, primarily amongst black people, and the creation of managerial structures and processes that reflect the demographics, and values of the wider society. 

Our Contribution

Through its value system, discipline and perseverance towards a just cause, the BMF has made a meaningful contribution to the stability of the country and the peaceful transition to democracy, through amongst others;

  • Providing leadership in producing the "Affirmative Action Blue Print" of 1993 and has also assisted many companies in the formation of Human Resources Policies that advance the process of employment equity.
  • The BMF staff members were, at different times, appointed to the Department of Labour as Directors for Employment Equity.
  • The BMF played a key role in Nedlac (notwithstanding that it was not a member of this body) in the negotiation and formation of Affirmative Action positions, which were incorporated into the Employment Equity Act and therefore contributed towards the enactment of the EE Act.
  • The BMF through its resolution in 1997 originated the Black Economic Empowerment Commission (BEECOM) which was then headed by Cyril Ramaphosa under the auspices of the Black Business Council.
  • Facilitating Developmental programmes locally and internationally for black managers.
  • Developing a network of highly skilled individuals who continually provide input to government, business and civil society in policy formulation, strategic planning and other key issues facing the country.
  • Participating in the formation and subsequent success of structures such as BUSA and BBC. 
  • The BMF was instrumental in the Employment Equity Amendments that were signed into law in January 2014.
